Stiff collar – an update…..

This is the report back on the spray starch I promised.
Having had a bit more time last night I decided to make the new improved version of spray starch.

In a stainless steel saucepan put 4 tablespoons of cornstarch (corn flour),
Whisk in 2 cups (500ml) of cold water,
Add 1 tablespoon of borax and mix well,
Mixing all the time, apply heat until the mixture starts to simmer,
At some point it will go from white to translucent – very quickly!
Simmer gently for around 20 minutes,
Remove from heat and allow to cool,
Add 1 or 2 drops of essential oil (optional) – I use lavender but tea tree is also good and apparently helps keep it from going off.

Now here is the one thing I would change – rather than leave it to get cold and then adding more water to create a thin liquid that can be sprayed, I would add at least 2 more cups of boiled and slightly cooled water to make sure you don’t land up with this….

Continue to add clean boiled and cooled water until you have a liquid that will easily get through a fine misting spray bottle. Don’t use a trigger bottle that sprays a stream but try an old hair product bottle with a very fine mist as this is better for the application onto the garment.
And the other thing that I would change? The quantities. This made an enormous batch of 2 litres in the end and I have given some away to friends because I am not sure yet how long it will keep for – an update for another day perhaps.

Altogether a big success because it was easy to make and works incredibly well – no white patches or anything – just nice crisp and smooth clothing.

Job well done and another saving – it won’t quite pay for all the fabric I bought yesterday, but it will go some way towards it! 😊
